Organic Fertilizers

Organic fertilizers are products where the nutrients are derived solely
from the remains or a by-product of an organism.  Many people claim that
organic lawn fertilizers are not as effective as man-made chemicals.
However, those people are typically looking only at short-term results and
ignoring the long-term benefits of organic lawn fertilizers and the
long-term problems caused by using chemicals on your lawn.

When you compare organic fertilizers to the synthetic chemical fertilizers
you find relatively lower concentrations of actual nutrients in the
organic lawn fertilizer.  This is why many people (generally those who
make a living from synthetic fertilizer) claim organic fertilizer is not
as effective.  It is true, depending on which fertilizers you compare,
that you may not find as much nitrogen, phosphorus, or potash (the three
major nutrients found in fertilizers) in organic fertilizers.  However,
just because you do not have as much nitrogen does not mean the fertilizer
is not as good, or better than, the synthetic.  While you may see the
grass get green very quickly using chemicals, you will not see any
improvement in what is most important for the long-term health of your
lawn—the soil.   In fact, you will probably see deterioration in your soil
quality because of the negative effects caused by the synthetic
fertilizer.

Organic fertilizers, on the other hand, will help build and develop your
soil so your lawn will be green AND healthy.  Organic care fertilizers
increase the water-holding capacity of your soil, they improve the
physical structure of the soil and allow air to get to plant roots better,
and they increase bacterial and fungal activity in your soil (very
important for a healthy lawn).  Basically, if you want a real healthy
lawn, using organic fertilizers will help you achieve that goal and should
be part of your organic lawn care program.
